Gracie Jiu Jitsu, also known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is regarded as one of the most effective martial arts for self defence and a new school has just opened at Miranda.
Black belt Owen Gee, the owner and head coach of Gracie Miranda, has been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since 1997.
“I was present at teacher Bruno Panno’s first class in Australia and I have been a student learning from Bruno and Marcos Nevel ever since that day,” he said.
“Brazilian jiu Jitsu has been a big part of my life from the first moment I trained. It really intrigues my brain and the chess match that ensues whenever you put on a gi.”
“Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a martial art discipline for all. When I first started I focused on pro athletes until I worked out that it actually helps everyone in daily life. It teaches people how to cope with the pressures of modern life, to remain calm and confront issues head on. It’s a tool for confidence.”
Gracie is a style which can be mastered by people of all ages and fitness levels. The driving principle is that a smaller, weaker person using proper technique like leverage, joint-locks and choke-holds can successfully defeat a bigger, stronger opponent.
Most street fights end up on the ground and Gracie Jiu Jitsu’s focus on grappling on the ground makes it the best martial art for self defence. Students experience an overall improvement on their focus, energy and general well-being.
As a martial art designed to allow the weaker to defeat the stronger, BJJ is a perfect fit for women and children who are interested in learning how to defend themselves.
